Add a loved one from an old black and white photo

Sometimes the only pictures left of them are old prints, faded colour or black and white. That is a fine place to start. Upload one as the photo of them, and add them to a recent family photo.

Anything we should know?

You can leave this empty.

Free to try. You only pay if you want to keep the full-size picture.

Can I use an old black and white photo?

Yes. Use the old photo as the picture of the person you are adding. In the finished picture they come out in colour, to match the rest of your family photo.

They look the age they are in the old photo, and we cannot change that. If you have a few photos from different years, use the one from the time of life you want to see.

What we do not do

We do not restore or colourise the old photo itself. It is not a separate service here, and you do not get a repaired copy of the original. You get a new picture in which they stand with your family.

If the old print is scratched or torn, a photo shop can repair it first. You can then use the repaired copy here.

Getting the most from an old print

  • Pick the photo where their face is biggest and clearest, even if it is not the best one of the whole scene.
  • If you only have a print, scan it, or photograph it in daylight near a window. Hold the phone straight above it so the print is not at an angle.
  • Turn off the flash. It makes a glare on glossy paper.
  • Add a second or third photo if you have one. Two photos help the likeness more than one.

Questions

Will they look old and faded in the new picture?

No. They are shown in colour and in the same light as the people in your family photo. We do not add a faded or see through effect.

What if the face in the old photo is very small?

Pick another photo if you can. A small, blurry face gives a weaker likeness, so the closest, sharpest photo is the best choice.

Can I add someone from a photo taken long before I was born?

Yes. It does not matter when the photo was taken. They appear at the age they were in it.
